Youths from across the continent have taken steps to promote Africa as a tourist destination, in an effort aimed at fostering economic development and growth.

Zimbabwe will next month host the second edition of the Africa Youths in Tourism Conference in Bulawayo where young people and stakeholders in tourism will gather to discuss and map the course for the effective participation of young people in tourism.

The conference, which will run under the theme “‘Fostering Tourism Development and Innovation in Africa through Youth participation”, will be held from the 19th to the 23rd of September.

In an interview with The Southern Times, the Zimbabwe Youths in Tourism information and publicity officer Millicent Muzembe said the main thrust of the conference will be on how to improve youth participation in the tourism sector.

In 2017, the estimated travel and tourism direct and indirect, as well as induced impact accounted for USD$8, 3 trillion contribution to the world’s GDP, which is 10,4 percent of global GDP and providing 313 million jobs.

The tourism industry is of great importance to development and African youths realize that they too, have a role to play in this vibrant industry.

“Africa is a significant source market and, in this regard, the African Youth in Tourism Conference seeks to explore opportunities of growth and development of tourism in Africa,” she said.
