(Above) Google opens Africa’s first AI research centre in Ghana.
Google has opened an Artifical Intelligence research laboratory in Accra, Ghana, the first of its kind in Africa.
The new lab will use AI to develop solutions in healthcare, education and agriculture such as helping to diagnose certain types of crop disease.
The centre will also focus on enhancing Google Translate’s ability to capture African languages more precisely. While hosting engineers and researchers together to work on AI-dedicated projects. Google says it will partner with local universities and institutions as well as policy-makers to develop AI in Africa.
In a statement, Google said, “AI has great potential to positively impact the world, and more so if the world is well represented in the development of new AI technologies. So it makes sense to us that the world should be well represented in the development of AI.”
“We’re excited to combine our research interests in AI and machine learning and our experience in Africa to push the boundaries of AI while solving challenges in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, and education,” the company said.
