The International Cricket Council (ICC) have confirmed interim changes to its playing regulations. The changes include the ban on the use of saliva to shine the ball and allowing home umpires in international series.

In line with concussion replacements, the Match Referee will approve the nearest like-for-like replacement. COVID-19 replacements will only be applicable in multi-day matches and will not be allowed in ODIs and T20Is. A team can be issued up to two warnings per innings but repeated use of saliva on the ball will result in a 5-run penalty to the batting side.

Whenever saliva is applied to the ball, the umpires will be instructed to clean the ball before play recommences.

NON-NEUTRAL UMPIRES

The requirement to appoint neutral match officials will be temporarily removed from the playing conditions for all international formats owing to the current logistical challenges with international travel.

The ICC will be able to appoint locally based match officials from the Elite Panel of Match Officials and the International Panel of Match Officials.
