MCC Theater’s world premiere production of School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play,a new comedy-drama by Jocelyn Bioh,began performances Off-Broadway November 1 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. The play takes place inside a boarding school for girls in Ghana in the 1980s, and looks at themes of beauty, adolescence, and colorism.
School Girls will officially open November 16, 2017.
Directed by Tony Award winner Rebecca Taichman, the play centers around an exclusive boarding school in Ghana, where Paulina (MaameYaa Boafo) is queen bee. Her reign is threatened by the mid-year arrival of Ericka (Nabiiyah Be), who catches the attention of her peers and a pageant recruiter.
